This is a technology that are very new to us end users so here are some questions and some answers that you may have. 3G will be common very soon but still most people have questions about it. Usability, what is normal prising, when will all the features of 3G become available to me and so on. We are doing our best to list questions that may be of interest for you before you buy your new 3G mobile phone.
- What is Third Generation or 3G?
Third generation is the term used for the next generation of mobile communication systems that includes voice and high-speed data. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) set standards and sanctions for their IMT-2000 (3G) standards and approved five terrestrial standards including EDGE and UMTS (WCDMA). These standards require a minimum speed of 144 Kbps in a mobile environment.
--------------------------------------------
- What is Third Generation (3G)?
First generation networks provided simple analogue voice telephony; second (current) generation added some data services like fax and email to basic voice service, with higher rate data capabilities expected over the next few years. The Third Generation of mobile telecommunications should be capable of providing data rates of up to 2 Megabits per second, in addition to conventional voice, fax and data services. This offers the prospect of high-resolution video and multimedia services on the move, such as mobile office services, virtual banking and on-line billing, home shopping, video conferencing, on-line entertainment and Internet access.
--------------------------------------------
- What is 3G?
3G is short for third generation mobile telephone technology. It gives you an indication of how efficiently data can be transferred.

- 3g/wifi and data costs? I have a pda phone with 3G and wifi functions... if i connect to the web using wifi (at home or elsewhere), do i avoid data charges? i'm paying bundle data charges which i assume are for 3G use only
Yes u do waver data charges as it works like say a bluetooth connection but thats if u either live near someone within a radius os someone with a wifi modem and no security or maybe a wifi web cafe etc. The bundle charges u are buying are only for when u conect using gprs
--------------------------------------------
- 3G enable phones? I just bought a PDA phones with Wi-Fi and 3G facilities.
I'm clear with Wi-Fi usage but not familiar with 3G. So what can 3G do?
With a 3G phone enabled you can watch television on your phone and have video conversation with another person that has a 3G enabled phone. Since you have WI-FI on your PDA I won't browsing the internet will be faster.
--------------------------------------------
- 3G phones cannot send SMS or MMS to other mobile phones which are not 3G. is that true?
I have a 3G phone from vodafone and i can't send SMS or MMS to other networks such as docomo.. i don't know if it's because i tried sending it to a non-3G phone.. or it's just that vodafone carriers cannot send SMS or MMS to other networks..I really don't know what to do
Who says it- you can
--------------------------------------------
- 3G card upload speed? I am looking to send file across from a laptop to another via connection to 3G phones. (Asumming that there is no WiFi connection available). Anyone knows what is the upload speed of a 3G card? I am talking about the one that connects to the PCMCIA slot of the laptop.
Well...I take it you are using a 3G provider in Europe...When I am using my pre-release Sony Ericsson P990 on a G3 network in London, I hit between 400 to 450 kbps solid...So via bluetooth or actual PC card, that should be your average...and remember NO ONE is hitting the 1.5 to 3 MBps as promised as of yet...
--------------------------------------------
- What types of services are available in 3G UMTS and EDGE?
Audio and video on demand, high-speed multimedia, and mobile Internet access are some of the possible services for 3G customers. Additionally, there are enhanced capacity, quality and data rates for operators.
At home: 3G affects us in many ways. We are able to manage our personal information, simplify tasks like shopping and make better use of our time. Examples include using 3G devices to: log onto your bank account for balance checks and bill payments; book hotel and dinner reservations upon arrival in a new city, view video clips of local tourist attractions; and manage your inventory on items that need restocking from your home's 'smart' refrigerator by ordering them and having those items ready for pickup from the local market.
At work: 3G enables increased flexibility in the work environment such as remote access to corporate networks for "home-officing." Examples include using your 3G device to discuss a draft presentation with colleagues back at headquarters while you are traveling and hold a tele-conference meeting while viewing the presentation and making changes online; or download a service video as a guide to repair a problem discovered while conducting a maintenance check. The services and applications for 3G mobility are unlimited and will be driven by customer demand.
--------------------------------------------
- Are not other countries licensing before the UK?
Finland has already licensed its 3G operators. However the UK is probably one of the best prepared countries in Europe for the introduction of services, and the Government expects that the UK will be in the first wave of countries to introduce 3G services in Europe. The UK is holding the first auction for 3G licences in the world.
--------------------------------------------
- Can I use a 3g sim card in a non 3g phone? I just recently got a replacement phone (cingular 2125) which is a 3g phone. But i found my old phone (Nokia 6682) and I decided to give the Cingular 2125 phone away to my friend. Well when she puts her non 3g sim card in the phone it works but when i put the 3g sim card in my Nokia 6682 it says that the sim card is not registered. Can I use the sim card in the Nokia or can I only use it in the Cingular 2125?
No, go to a Cingular Outlet store, have them check your sim card, they will replace it for free if the sim card is what's causing the problem. You may or may not lose all the data saved to the sim card...
--------------------------------------------
- Do 3g phones work on any 3g network around the world? I want to get a 3g phone, can they be used in any country that has a 3g network? (assuming you are subscribed)
they sure can. 3g is all the same around the world. a 3g network in new zealand is like one in the states.
--------------------------------------------
- What features are available from 3G handsets/devices?
Customers are able to select a 3G device that is appropriate to their needs. Leading vendors such as Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, and Sony Ericsson, are developing a wide variety of EDGE and/or UMTS terminals. A few of the options available are camera, video camera, radio, MP3 player, person-to-person or group multimedia communication, internet access and browsing, integration into corporate IT systems, as well as email and content applications.
--------------------------------------------
- How much will 3G handsets/services cost?
It is difficult to say; prices are principally a matter for the market to decide. However, consumer protection rules will apply and OFTEL will take action against anti-competitive practices.
--------------------------------------------
- 3G or not 3G? That is the question!?
So, should I go 3G (SE608i) or be happy with a SE w810i? Not a 3G phone but good audio function... Should I get 3G since mobiles are going THAT direction already?
Depends really. The networks would LIKE you to go 3G since the phones are more expensive and they get more efficiency from the network with more 3G phones.
If your just looking to make simple phone calls, maybe some text messages then really, it doesn't matter - go with what you like.
If you want to do fancy things with your phone (video clips, web browsing, etc.), then definitely go 3G - the performance is tons better.

- What spectrum is used for 3G EDGE and UMTS services?
EDGE can be deployed in 800, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz bands and complements UMTS technology. Therefore, an operator may deploy EDGE in less populated or rural areas because it offers excellent propagation qualities; the lower the position in the spectrum, the less energy it takes to deliver the signal and the greater distance it will travel. As a narrowband radio technology, EDGE will also allow operators the choice of offering 3G services without purchasing addition spectrum with a 3G license.
Furthermore, UMTS licenses are awarded through auction by the regulatory bodies in each country. According to the UMTS Forum, UMTS has been adopted by 98% of operators awarded new 3G licenses as of April 2004. The UMTS Forum Special Assets Group produced three important reports setting out the Forum's position on key spectrum issues. These reports addressed the overall spectrum requirements for UMTS, spectrum demand per terrestrial operator in the initial phase of deployment and on frequency bands that are being considered internationally as candidates to provide additional spectrum for UMTS/IMT-2000 [UMTS Forum Reports #5, #6 and #7]. These reports significantly influenced the decision-making process within various regulatory bodies across the world. Generally, UMTS may be deployed in the 1900, 2000, 2100, and 2200 spectrum bands.
--------------------------------------------
- What do you mean by third generation?
An examination of 3G's genealogy will help in understanding the term. In the beginning there was 1G, the first generation of technology. AMPS (advanced mobile phone service) provided users with analogue voice capabilities but no data services. This meant you could use your mobile phone to chat with your friends but you could not send them text messages.
--------------------------------------------
- Daily Wireless: Do you foresee any one of these technologies becoming nearly ubiquitous, or do you see the current and perhaps future technologies continuing to be diverse and co-existing — or even interoperable?
Phil Solis: Among the three technologies we are discussing — 3G, mesh Wifi, and WiMax — 3G will be the most ubiquitous as far as coverage, as mobile operators upgrade existing 2G cellular networks to 3G, starting with cities and suburbs.
--------------------------------------------
- How will roaming be implemented?
The Government expects that roaming will be introduced commercially. Two existing Second Generation mobile operators, Vodafone and BTCellnet, agreed to a modification to their Telecoms Act Licences to incorporate a roaming condition which will be triggered if they win a 3G licence. The condition provides for the Director General of Telecommunications to determine a roaming agreement between a new entrant and the existing operator if this can not be reached through commercial negotiation.
--------------------------------------------
- What can 3G do for me?
Video conferencing was first marketed as 3G's most essential feature. However, studies have shown that music downloads are in strong demand while video telephony only accounts for a very small fraction of use. 3G applications include map and positioning services, multiplayer gaming, online chat and live feeds of stock market updates.
--------------------------------------------
- Daily Wireless: 3G technologies are only now getting wide deployment, though access is effectively limited. Yet there’s already talk about 4G technologies and/or Mobile WiMax supplanting 3G. Why should I bother with 3G considering these facts?
Phil Solis:For each service provider, their competitive situation, timing, assets like spectrum and base stations, and other factors will determine what the best move is for that provider. If a service provider has 3G spectrum and no WiMax spectrum, then it makes sense to deploy 3G if there is an immediate need to compete. Some service providers, like in Latin America, are considering skipping 3G and going to 4G or Mobile WiMax if regulatory conditions permit that. There is less pressure to compete with a mobile broadband technology in the immediate time frame, so they can wait and consider their options. Companies like Sprint that have ample spectrum for 3G and Mobile WiMax have chosen to use both technologies in a highly complementary fashion.
--------------------------------------------
- What's the latest news on 3G?
Vodafone launched its high-speed downlink packet access last month. This extends the current 3G technology and is sometimes referred to as 3.5G. The company will sell data cards to enable laptops to use the higher speeds. The service costs £25 for up to 250Mb of web surfing.
--------------------------------------------
- How do you distribute 3g video content to mobile phone users?
how do you distribute 3g video content to mobile phone users?
Let's say you have created a video content in 3G format, how can you distribute and sell it? Mobile Phone companies like 3G or VODAPHONE seem not that open for external content providers (the exeption are established content producers like AARDMAN ANIMATION : Angry Kid) .
thru bluetooth,infrared,or cable

- What will a 3G mobile give me that a non 3G can't?
On the rare occasions that I have been deprived of internet access, my old non 3G phones have been able to access the internet, do email, albeit a bit long winded. What are the advantages/disadvantages of 3G?
3G - 3rd Generation is like looking at broadband in comparison to 2.5G which is like a dial up connection. The 3G network is not complete yet but is you set your phone up on an automatic network selection it should pick up the best it can get.
Apart from better speeds when surfing, you can also make and receive video calls and watch TV.
If your going for a new phone a the mo, the newest technology is HSDPA - High Speed Data Packet Access. This is even quicker that 3G so it may be the way to go. I know its already available on the Vodafone network

- 3G data plans for Cingular?
I heard that Cingulr has special plans for 3G phones, just wanted to know where i could find dat info and is the Treo 680 a 3G phone?
You should check out there website. they have phone info and a map of the 3G coverage area. http://www.cingular.com/home/

- What is 3G (mobile technology) and what are its exact advantages??
3G phones are gettin very popular these days, and am lagging behind a lill in knowing the technology, so i like to know what exactly 3G phones advantages other than high speed internet connection. does it be helpful even in remote places where there are no signal and can i use my 3G phone when i go to different countries.
3G phones is on the high end... which means it's far more features and more competitive than the 2G and the 1st gen phones.
With 3G, you will be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet or your corporate intranet at broadband speeds (as high as 2Mbps) from just about anywhere, enabling many new mobile wireless applications such as video conferencing, video and audio streaming, rich e-mail, rich Web surfing, and more.
You should visit this site to understand more about 3G technology. http://www.cdw.com/webcontent/editorial/...

- 3G enabled on o2?
i have got a 3G phone, the sony ericsson k800i. ive tried video calling people and all i says is 'video call failed'
Do I have to enable 3G on my pay as you go 02 sim, or what?
--------------------------------------------
Your 3G will normaly be set up automatically but check buy looking in your menu for your "Get Settings" option.this will get all the settings you will require for your phone.
The only other thing is that you are outside a 3G network coverage area.these tend to be in the centre of cities and large towns but go outside these and you'll revert to normal 2G. If in doubt call customer services (100 from you handset) and see if they can help.
--------------------------------------------
- Can a 3G cell phone with WCDMA reception receive CDMA signals?
I am thinking of getting a 3G WCDMA cellphone, but would like to know if it can operate in areas using CDMA? For example, a Nokia 3G phone operating in the US?
no it doesnt
--------------------------------------------
- Do all 3G cell phones support direct emailing (i.e. PC email direct to your cell phone)?
Not necessarily, mobiles in general regardless of whether they are 3G or not will support pull e-mail from either a pop3 or imap 4 e-mail address so basicly anything not web based.... Blackberry supports a push e-mail system where the blackberry server checks up to 10 e-mails accounts for you are sends a copy down to your phone.
--------------------------------------------
- Running costs for a 3G SIM card, Which one?
I have a laptop that has a slot for a 3G SIM card (must be on 'Orange' UK 3G network).
I estimate that I would use about 1gb of data per month. What would be the cheapest way to get a 3G SIM card for my laptop?
Should I use PAYG or Contract ?
I'm not sure what the costs would be, but the payg would be cheaper, as it always is. Pay and go doesnt charge you if you dont use any money, but contract will always charge you if you use it or not.
--------------------------------------------
- If you have a 3g phone and 3g service isnt in your city yet, can you still surf the internet with 3g speeds? I was thinking of getting a 3g phone and I have a Cingular Pre-Paid Sim card, and I was wondering can you still search the internet on your phone with the UMTS speeds?
No u sure can't
--------------------------------------------
- My husband has bother with 3G mobile - do you? Husband took out 18mth contract with 3G. The main thing he wanting to know when taking out contract was that network was good in our area and they said it was very good. About 9 mths down the line and his phone is crap!! No network anywhere he goes (its a business phone and he travels to loads of areas and gets nothing)! He got another 3G phone of shelf and put sim card in - no difference!! 3G say, "yeah, network isn't good in your area now"! What can we do?
3G is relatively new and networks are being expanded as we speak.
--------------------------------------------
- 3G phone in question? What is all this so called 3G phone all about?
3G Stands for 3rd-generation. Analog cellular phones were the first generation. Digital marked the second generation.
3G is loosely defined, but generally includes high data speeds, always-on data access, and greater voice capacity. The high data speeds are possibly the most prominent feature, and certainly the most hyped. They enable such advanced features as live, streaming video.
There are several different 3G technology standards. The most prevalent is UMTS, which is based on WCDMA. (WCDMA and UMTS are often used interchangeably.)
